Beginning in July 2008, SGOG will assist the citizens of Prince George and their elected leaders to transform their downtown to a more sustainable neighbourhood. Smart Growth on the Ground (SGOG) in Prince George will mark the first time that this approach has been replicated in northern BC, and will also be the first SGOG experience in a city that serves as a regional centre. The initiative will focus on downtown Prince George.

In Prince George, new innovations to the SGOG process will introduce leading-edge research on the links between energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and urban form.  Participants will learn how urban development decisions are directly related to climate change, and will use this information to inform their land use and infrastructure decisions for downtown Prince George.

The lessons from SGOG in Prince George will continue to expand the range of community types for which SGOG communities can serve as models.  This SGOG approach is transferable to other BC municipalities, especially those in northern locations and/or facing economic transitions and those struggling with climate change issues.
